Issue 2: Audio Edition (beta)
|After the success of issue 1’s audio edition, we’d like to ask for your help in creating audio recordings for issue 2. All you need is a microphone and a copy of Audacity!
The process is going to be similar to how we compiled our first issue. Briefly:
- If you’ve got a copy of issue 2 (it’s downloadable here, take a look through and see if there’s anything you’d like to record. If you’ve not got a copy, check out the Google Drive link below.
- Leave a comment saying what you’re going to record and we’ll mark it off on the list.
- Record your article(s) and save the output as Flac (this enables us to encode each recording more consistently). If bandwidth/space is going to be an issue, then ogg/mp3 is fine too.
- When you’ve finished your recording, let us know in the comments. If you’re happy with Google Drive, you can upload the audio to here: http://bit.ly/1siEN63.
- We’ll compile the recordings and post an update when they’re available.
Here’s a list of the main articles in issue 2:
Welcome, News/Opinion, Letters, Show reports(Graham is doing this)Group test: text editors(Graham has recorded this)- Code Android, Javascript and Python
- Interview: Carrie Anne Philbin, Clive Beale & Ben Nuttall
Munich switches to Linux(recorded by Stuart Langridge)Spotlight on Young Rewired State(IanW is recording this)FAQ: Docker(KentGeek is doing this)- Sysadmin
Cloudadmin(IanW has done this!)- FOSSpicks
Learn how to file bug reports(Charles has recorded this already)- Build a Raspberry Pi arcade machine
Make KDE even more awesome(Geddes has done this!)Grace Hopper and the UNIVAC(Ray Benitez is recording this)- Conquer UEFI
- Python: Building fractals
Key distribution explained(Stilvoid is recording this)- Your first kernel module
- Using Filezilla and an introduction to SSH
/dev/random(Joe Ressington will record this)
As before, we’ve skipped over the news, distro updates, gaming and reviews as they’re a little out of date.
Issue 2 is going to be released CC BY-SA around Christmas time, and we’ll try to compile the audio edition for the same time.
Thanks again for all your help!

I’ll do /dev/random again.
I’ll do the key distribution article.
I’ll do FAQ: Docker
I have the most appallingly slow internet but it’s being uploaded now!
I”l do Filing Bug Reports
I wasn’t expecting such a quick response! I’ve marked those on the list – thanks!
I’ve done the Munich article; uploading now.
Wow. Thanks Stuart!
I’ll do Grace Hopper. What’s the “house style” for reading out code listings or similar?
Thanks Ray. There’s no real house style. If the code gets too much, I think it’s ok to skip over or refer the listener back to the original article.
LV002_GraceHopper.flac uploaded.
Your article list above doesn’t match the article titles in the index. Which is Sysadmin? Which is Cloudadmin?
Also you go by issue number. The spine mentions 002, but the cover only mentions issue month (in this case May 2014).
Slightly better co-ordination required, I would suggest.
I’ll be happy to contribute at some future date, but I don’t have an suitable quality mics at present.
Thanks for considering to help. It’s our second issue, so I think it’s more straightforward referred to as issue 002 rather than by month, which nobody understands. In the magazine, CloudAdmin (p62) and SysAdmin (p64) have large titles so it should’t be too confusing.
I’ll do ‘Spotlight on Young Rewired State’
Thanks Ian!
I’ve uploaded a FLAC of LV002_YoungRewiredState to your Google Drive.
Thanks Ian!
This is such a good idea! I barely get any chance to read these days, I can’t deal with screens (even e-reader screens) and it’s hard to set aside the time to read the mag in real life, unless I have a long period of travel or something.
LV really sets itself apart with ideas like this 😀
I had some spare time so I’ve also done Cloud Admin. LV002_CloudAdmin.flac uploaded to your Google Drive. Merry Christmas 🙂
Awesome! Thanks Ian!
Graham I’ve done the KDE article will send it to you
a.s.a.p
Geddes
Thanks Geddes!
The Peppertop (extremely) Amateur Dramatics Society has recorded another instalment of “The Audio Adventures of Elvie”. I’ve uploaded it to your Google Drive.
Brilliant, thanks Mark!
The awesomely epic guide to KDE has been uploaded.
Thanks Geddes! That’s fantastic.
I’ve finally uploaded /dev/random to the Drive folder.
Thanks Joe!
I’m doing Interview at the moment.
I’ll do UEFI.
Uploaded
Graham I’ve noticed my articles file size is high compared to the average size of the rest. I’m thinking it may be a result of the way I edited it. Is it going to be a problem?
Thanks
Geddes
ETA on the PDF being released? It’s past the quoted Christmas time…
Yes, apologies for the delay. Straight after Christmas / New Year we’ve returned to a packed deadline, so once we have the magazine finished by the end of this week, we’ll be able to focus on putting issue 2 online (and properly, not just throwing online a PDF). Thanks for your patience!
Yeesh. So I said I was going to do the key distribution article but since then I’ve had sore throat after cold after sore throat 🙁
If anyone wants to pick that up sooner than I get around to it, please do! I don’t want to hold up the release of this on a promise that I’m failing to keep :S
I’d love to help. How do I get a copy of issue 2?
Thanks! Issue 2 is online here: http://www.linuxvoice.com/download-linux-voice-issue-2/
I’ll try to get to FOSS picks
I’ll do Python: Building fractals
Uploaded: lv002_Python_Drawing_Pretty_Patterns.flac
By the way, at least 2 uploads (Charles Barnwell’s ones) have not been crossed off the list above – is anyone still monitoring this thread?
Thanks for making the recording Andy. I’ll update the status of the various recordings and try and pull everything together next week.
Thanks, not meaning to nag – just checking I was commenting in the right place. Hope this week’s deadline goes well!
As discussed on IRC, I have uploaded a video of me reading the article (!) which you are welcome to put on the LV youtube channel, and/or use under any CC license you like. If you felt like linking to my own youtube channel, it’s at https://www.youtube.com/user/ajbalaam
Are you guys having trouble finding the time to make the audio editions? Maybe if you ask for help here some people might be able to do some of the work?
