Rejoice, my favourite podcast is up. All is well!
After the last 2 podcasts I get the distinct feeling the guys might be ready to call it quits.
I would be really disappointed.
I love their silly take on making podcasts, their humor, their politics, the focus on technological freedom … as well as the serious linux takes. I’ve been listening to their old “Tux Radar” casts … they really had a lot of energy then.
I’d encourage them to monetize the podcast to make it worth their while … I’d have no problem hearing some ads if it meant they’d keep on with it.
Thanks for your efforts linux voice team! Love every cast!
I used to listen to TuxRadar too. Although I might go back to listen to some episodes to check if the energy is any different. Sometimes if something gradually declines its hard to notice. (like the brakes on your car)
Another great podcast guys, well worth the extra wait ๐
Minix was a bit of a revelation to me! Never paid any attention to it before. His creator Andrew Tanenbaum seem to be a bit of an unsong hero. I had a quick browse at his books and I must admit I really enjoy what I’ve read so far. Must check it out.
Oh, Andrew there is a command line tool to save BBC iplayer videos for prosperity ๐ Can’t remember the name though…
Am I the only one left who thinks that there should be a place for text-mode web browsers in a modern OS?
I too get the feeling they are at least pairing down the group. I hope it doesn’t come to that. I look forward with great excitement to the podcast every month.
That said, we are all adults and understand life and career can get in the way of a labor of love. Please take care of yourselves first, but know we appreciate and enjoy your efforts.
Thanks for all the kind comments about the podcast.
There is obviously some truth in life getting the better of us these last few months and we’ve talked a little about what’s been happening in the podcasts themselves; babies, moving house and new jobs having conspired against us.
We’ve been doing this for nearly nine years, and for most of that time, we’ve all been working at the same place, either at Linux Voice or at Linux Format. We’re now mostly working independently of each other, with different priorities and commitments, and to a lesser extent, broader interests than those that originally motivated us. This too has made it difficult to find the time for the podcast.
Outside of these practical issues, however, there is a genuine wish to keep the podcast going. We all consider it a privilege and an honour to have such a rational, intelligent, and committed listenership, and we have more listeners now than at any point in the past.
We may have to change things around and experiment a little to find a new fulcrum for our future podcast endeavours. This may take a little time, and we may want to try some new things. But this end of year/Christmas period may be the best way to take a break and think about it.
But, we will try to get together amd record one more for 2017, and we’ll stay in touch.
Graham
Its amazing to see this level of dedication to the podcast even though real life tries to get in the way every time. I’ve listened to many podcasts but they all seem to stop at some point in time. Linux Voice/Tuxradar has been there all the way through.
Also the way issues such as mental health is communicated so openly. Its a joy to hear such honest admissions and stories of self help.
@Andrew – Was that a reference to the Murakami book 1984?
@Graham – Keep up the good work and although I don’t want to put on any pressure.. I am looking forward to the next podcast, whenever that may be.
Thanks for the update Graham! To repeat: love what you guys do.
I’m ready for the Technology | Politics | Society | ETC podcast of the future!
The *.* Cast.
Huge Congrats Ben! Glad to hear you’re getting some sleep!
Also congrats to Ben and Andrew on their new jobs. Is it ok to ask then what Graham and Mike are up to generally?! Are you still writing for Linux Magazine Graham?
Mike – Have you tried Virtual Console on the Wii U? It has HDMI out, and looks like Mario 64 is on their. The Wii U pro controller is pretty nice. Don’t know about latency though. I think the SNES emulation is good, but NES, not so. Also, have you seen Mario Maker?
Also awesome bit of trivia on Intel ME and the SuperFX chip!
Re: Design, I’m surprised no-one mentioned the annoying self-advertising that you see on ‘free’ (i.e. not FOSS) and commercial software. I hate all the extra pomp that you get with bits of software that somehow feel they must advertise their presence to you and people round you with flashy in-your-face splashscreens, or wasted space with large logos. When I moved to FOSS software, I was surprised how bland they are. And this is something I now really appreciate. They’re not ‘loud’ they’re ‘quiet’ apps – don’t demand your attention and play well with other software.
Hey Duncan, I don’t have a Wii U! Kinda tempted to get one to make my collection more complete, but then I don’t have a Switch either. Simply too busy at the moment ๐ Have a good Christmas!
Have a great christmas Mike! As you’re a fan of mario have a look at mario maker videos by ryukahn – they are oddly addictive!
@Mike – If you want a cool retro style game to try out you should check out Stardew Valley. Its a very well crafted game and addictive too!
you asked for an example of bad design, and then followed a lot of head scratching. The Iphone is a perfect example of bad design. There are no visual cues to tell you what to do next, swipe left, swipe right, or throw the thing against the wall. I have found it to be singularly frustrating to try and use, it comes with a 280 page manual which is both useless and inaccurate. I have since switched to a Galaxy Android phone, which although similar, has a slightly better designed interface.
Enjoyed the podcast and look forward to more in the future.
Just wishing a happy Christmas to the four of you and your families – all the best for 2018. Cheers!
Wishing you all a Happy Christmas. Thanks for all your work over the years.

And a happy new year to us all
A new episode maybe with some fresh ideas would be great. Sounds like its about time to change up the format of the podcast to keep it chugging along.
Missing the best Linux podcast in the world… Any news on series 6 for 2018 or has this now been canned?
Ditto … I’d join Patreon just to support you guys!
Yes! We will be back. It may be slightly different (Mike’s not sure if he can make every episode this time), but we’re going to put something together and put an update here when we’ve got a plan. Thanks for all the support!
Awesome, looking forward to it Graham!
Great to hear it and happy new year ๐
D
Great news Graham! thanks!
Great news, I loved Linux voice mag, and you guys make all of our day listening to your antics and having a laugh. As people have stated if it needs funding, then let’s get that sorted some how..
Let’s get more LV merchandise out to raise some funding ๐
i hope the podcast returns soon i have been an avid listener and supporter of your magazines , without the podcast its been like 4 of my best mates have left me , i know you all have very busy lives and it must be difficult to find the time, but heres hoping .
thanks lads
I hope so too! I’ve been listening since the podcast came out and I haven’t missed an episode yet!
I really miss the show! I’m sure lots of us would be happy to donate using Patreon if it helps. Even if the content was just unstructured chat about Amiga/fungiculture/MikeOS related topics, I’d be happy to listen!
Still clinging to some hope of this myself. If they could do a Patreon or something to help them along that would be great.
Could be a question of time and maybe motivation but hopefully its just a matter of sorting out some reward incentive. ๐
Yes I’m hoping too… would also be up for a patreon thing! Am missing the podcast..
