Podcast Season 1 Episode 3
|Title: Something’s brewing
In this episode: There’s lots of new Ubuntu goodness and a fresh version of Firefox. Debian is to dump its old boot scripts and OwnCloud gets closer to replacing Google Docs. Ben’s writing a book and Solus OS is no more. Plus, we’ve got discoveries, brains neurons, a ballot and… one, more, thing.
What’s in the show:
- News:
-
Various Ubuntu 13.10s have been released; Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu and Gnome, along with the first release of Ubuntu for phones. Version 25 of Firefox has also been released, now with an added web audio API. Debian is to switch to either systemd or upstart, instead of those old init scripts. The latest beta of OwnCloud 6 includes ODT document collaborative editing. Ben is co-authoring a book called ‘Learning Python with Raspberry Pi‘ with Alex Bradbury of the Raspberry Pi Foundation and the highly-regarded beginner-friendly Solus OS is to shut down.
- Things we found out in a week:
- Andrew:
- The Gods of Metal sent Robert Plant to cross Andrew’s path on his last day in the office.
- Both cars and Bath Council fail.
- CrunchBang Linux. It may look scary but it’s filled with awesome.
- Mike:
- Bebo, a social networking site popular with children.
- Your ultra-fast video card memory can be used as swap space.
- Ben:
- Andrew:
- The Part Where People Ask Us To Do Things:
- Vocalise your Neurons:
- Voice of the Masses: Is Google’s grip on Android too tight?
- And yes, there’s a one more thing.
-
This might be most effort we’ve put into a challenge since the old ‘write a games’ test many years ago.
-

Great podcast as always 🙂
Idea for a challenge: make something awesome using Blender (open source 3D modelling software). This is a really cool bit of software, and you can do almost anything with it. Some suggestions might be a model of Ben's head complete with a mohican, a simple game or whatever else you feel like. Why? Because its always good finding new, free software and Blender is imho a great example of the way FOSS should be done. Good luck!
Just to prove my point on one hundred lines of Python — here's a file system in less than a hundred lines (once you remove blank lines and comments) http://www.stavros.io/posts/python-fuse-filesystem/
ohhh, I got a challenge for you!
Use one of these mouse free window managers, like ratpoison, for the usual mundane tasks, roughly one hour a day, then report what it's like the next podcast!
Debian kit for android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.dyndns.sven_ola.debian_kit&hl=en
Not exactly running it on bare metal but the chroot should be good enough for r-pi replacement.
Challenge idea:
Take your latest linux rant (like the touchpad scrolling not working) and turn it into a bug report. Compare and contrast the responses you got from the different projects.
OK Andrew, you kindled the suspense for me. Any hints? or do we go straight to wild speculation …
Speculate wildly, of course! But only for a week: we should able to let you know what we're up to next Monday…
Hey guys, it was quicker to download the mp3 and transcode it to opus using ffmpeg than to download the opus file :S
Love the podcast guys, long time listener from your linux format days.
I hear your pain with Ubuntu, 13.10 was the last straw for me. Finally switched to Arch Linux (manjaro), OH! man where has Arch been all my life – only a few rough edges, but fast and stable and the hardware works, unlike ubuntu?
Hope you get a job soon and get some grub down you..
I am so glad Andrew is back :>
Hi chaps
If you were to fill in the info on this Frontier silicon page then Linuxlifestye will show up on every internet radio when folk search podcasts for linux
http://www.wifiradio-frontier.com/setupapp/fs/asp/help/SuggestWA.asp?lngy=eng
I would do it for you but it asks "Station URL (asx,pls,m3u,ram)"
I couldn't answer that question for you
It's worth the time because you will massively increase your audience
Hey guys! Thanks for the new episode, it was great!
Two quick requests: first, might you be able to name the media files something like linuxlifestyle_s01e03.ogg instead of juyst s01e03.ogg? Admittedly, I could just rename the files after downloading them to my oggcast directory, so maybe I'm just lazy, but it's still a bit generic.
Secondly, for the sake of those of us subscribing via RSS, could you change the URL for the media download links from relative to absolute paths?? If you aren't browsing the site, copying the link and pasting into the terminal for wget simply won't work!
Anyway, keep up the great work.
<i>"might you be able to name the media files something like linuxlifestyle_s01e03.[opus] instead of just s01e03.[opus]?"</i>
Also, metadata please! (I will happily volunteer to help with that, I could use the practice anyway.)
Looks like you're using current encoders for ogg and opus, if your source material is .flac with a complete set of metadata, you should be able to feed it directly (without decoding) to oggenc and opusenc and have it preserve the metadata during encoding. (Current oggenc and opusenc builds accept .flac as an input format.)
Great podcasts. Keep up the good work. Really enjoying them. Here’s a suggestion: Why not set challenges for listeners every so often? In fact, listeners could make suggestions for challenges then report back here.
Yes, I tried to suggest the new podcast to Frontier Silicon as well, since you can't even add podcasts to your My Added list like you can with streaming stations. I've got two sets that use Frontier Silicon chips, so it'd be nice to have it on there.
The suggest a station page also seems geared more towards suggesting a streaming station than a podcast, hence the Station URL field rather than somewhere to enter the RSS feed or such.
There is a contact us link on the Frontier Silicon portal page too, but I got distracted around about the point I found that and didn't pursue it any further.
TuxRadar is still on there though…
Challenge for the next podcast: Use "ranger" for two weeks!
http://ranger.nongnu.org/
"ranger is a file manager with VI key bindings. It provides a minimalistic and nice curses interface with a view on the directory hierarchy."
So, show off your geekiness by switching to a curses-based file manager for two weeks, with vim-commands like h,j,k,l,yy,pp and so on (the non-believers _may_ use the arrowkeys instead)
Here is a basic tutorial:
http://bloerg.net/2012/10/17/ranger-file-manager.html
But it will be very familiar for anyone used to editing in vim. I am much more efficient in ranger than in any other file manager, and I thought you should give it a try.
And Linux Voice for the win!
Hey guys!
Its great to hear your keeping the same style of podcast going!
I am exicited for the future of your mag and poscast. I wonder what I will do with my silly LXF magazines now…
I did some searches on the matter and what caught my attention was the adriane project http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-adriane/ the main developer of the knoppix distribution (first ever linux live cd I hear) develops it together with his wife who is visually impaired. I would like to know how it compares to vinux. And i would love to hear from users of linux what distribution they would recommend for visually impaired people, or is it not a matter of distro but more of what packages you should install? Or is there a web page for visually impaired people using linux? Didn't seem to find one. May I suggest on evaluating a distribution for visually impaired people on separating installation and usage? Thanks very much for the podcast and all the work… wish I could support the new magazin 🙁
Damn it! My neurons are so excited, they keep producing longer sentences then 140 caracters. So, could you please also put up an e-mail adresse in written form somewhere on the website?
A challenge: –
You guys talk about Amigas, Commodore 64s, Spectrums, BBC Bs etc. All of which when booted dropped you into BASIC which is something you now don't seem to mention or use.
Try a flavour of Basic (e.g. Gambas, MikeOS Basic…) and let us know how you got on programming without a "{" or "}" in sight.
Keep up the good work.
